A FORMER nurse has become a British powerlifting champion - at the tender age of 66.
Shy Pat Tombs started using weights six years ago in a bid to lose weight and boost her self-confidence.She took to the exercise regime immediately and the 5-footer was nicknamed The Mighty Atom by fellow gym-goers.
The pumping-iron pensioner, from Clacton, Essex, can now lift almost 100kg - twice her her own body weight.
And Pat used her incredible brawn to scoop three unofficial British records in her age group for squat, bench press and deadlift at a contest in Bournemouth.
She said: “Knowing that I had broken records in each of the categories left me walking on air - it really was an amazing feeling."

Her exploits have earned Pat a job as a personal trainer at her local gym - and she hopes her story will inspire other OAPs to give weightlifting a try.
She said: “Retirement is the perfect time to be trying out different things and I think a lot of people will surprise themselves with what they are capable of.
“I love being active and the thought of being stuck at home watching daytime television makes my blood run cold.”
